Plymouth Argyles re-arranged fixtures falls foul of the weather

Friday, January 22nd 2010 15:45

Plymouth Argyle vs Barnsley OFF

Argyle's match with Barnsley has been called off because of a waterlogged pitch at Home Park.

Despite the extensive work of groundsman Colin Wheatcroft and his team, the pitch has failed to recover from the battering it took in last weekend's rain-soaked match with Crystal Palace.

Argyle executive director Keith Todd said: "We are extremely disappointed that Saturday's game with Barnsley has been called off.

"Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the Football League have decided the pitch is not safe for play.€

Further heavy rain on Tuesday and Thursday severely hampered Colin's reparation efforts and, following an official pitch inspection, the Football League have taken the decision to postpone the fixture.

It is obviously a cruel irony that Barnsley are again the victims of the shocking weather conditions, as the original meeting with the Tykes was abandoned after 58 minutes because of heavy rain.

"We are gutted the game has been called off,€ said Head Coach Paul Mariner.

"Colin has worked through immensely difficult conditions all week. I've just been out on the pitch and it is simply impossible for a game of football to be played.€
