The former leader of the Labour Party, Michael Foot, has died.

The 96 year old was leader of the opposition between 1980 and 1983.

Mr Foot began his career as an MP for Plymouth's Devonport constituency in the 1945 general election and held that seat until 1955

As a 90th brithday present he was registered as a Plymouth Argyle player having followed the club since his childhood.

Mr Foot, who led the Labour Party from 1980 to 1983, was born in Plymouth, and educated at Plymouth College Preparatory School

He fought for the Plymouth Devonport constituency in the 1945 General Election and won the seat for Labour for the first time.

Mr Foot lost the Devonport seat in the 1955 General Election and went on to represent Labour in the Welsh seat of Ebbw Vale.

The 96 year old was leader of the opposition between 1980 and 1983.

Mr Foot died shortly before 7am today at this home in Hampstead, North London, according to reports.

He had been ill for some time and had been receiving 24-hour care.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown today paid tribute to former Labour leader as a "man of deep principle and passionate idealism''.
