Voters in Iceland reject plan to compensate Britain over the collapse of its banks.

Cornish Councils could lose millions

Voters in Iceland have overwhelmingly rejected a plan to repay the billions the country owes to the UK and the Netherlands.

The debt was racked up after the collapse of the internet bank Icesave when thousands of investors had to be compensated for their losses.

When The Icelandic bank Landsbanki collapsed in October 2008, the former county council lost five million pounds worth of investmants and Restormal borough council four million.

Afterwards it was revealed that they'd gone against treasury policy by investing so much in a single bank.

Early results from a referendum suggest 93 percent of the people voted against the deal.
